“Not all men” I say, “there is but one who is purely good.” But which man am I referring to? In Iceland, deep in the woods and the snow, there lives a lad raised by wolves who feasts upon sunbeams and loves all of nature, unburdened by man’s sins. Tenderly, he strokes a hungry squirrel, sharing with her the last acorns of the autumn harvest. A tear rolls down his cheek. Who is he

According to a letter Tolkien wrote in 1971, his school-friends “used to write his initials as ‘JR2T’ and pronounce them ‘to rhyme with dirt’.

a list of current immortals

  • florence welch: probably like 200 BCE celtic queen
  • keeanu reeves: 1500 renaissance hoe
  • jeff goldblum: late 1800′s i would guess
  • harry styles: fairly new immortal, 1970′s
  • lorde: 1920′s flapper era
  • hozier: man who even knows, rough estimate is like, 400 BCE
  • john mulaney: 1930′s/40′s, still bitter about the great depression probably and if he could put it in a bit with out being #exposed he would
  • paul rudd: newest to the immortal club, didn’t age past the 1990′s

I feel like this list is forgetting Sir Patrick Stewart who I believe has not aged since 7000 BCE.. After all his twin brother was the Kennewick man..

as a self-appointed expert on Hozier, i would say that date is possibly accurate.

many of Hozier’s songs reference being buried in the earth (In a Week, Work Song), and some are directly inspired by bog bodies (Like Real People Do, Run). two of the most famous Irish bog bodies, Old Croghan Man and Clonycavan Man, are dated between 392 and 175 BCE, and both are speculated to have been kings ritually sacrificed to the goddess of the land. in Take Me to Church, Hozier demonstrates a willingness to offer sacrifices to a goddess, and in Foreigner’s God, he thinks fondly upon the image of a pre-Christian Ireland (“when the land was God-less and free”). as well, Old Croghan Man is estimated to have been about 6′6, and Hozier is about 6′5.

the only possible flaw in this theory is that in a Facebook Q&A (here at 5:28), Hozier says that he is over 3000 years old. 400 BCE only puts him at ~2400. it could be that after so many years he’s lost track of how many thousands, but another possibility is that he is more contemporaneous with an older bog body, the Cashel Man, also presumed to be a sacrificed king. that would put him closer to 4000 than 3000, but again, we could forgive an immortal for getting his millenia wrong.

in any case, it seems likely to me that Hozier is an ancient Irish king who was ritually sacrificed to the old gods, but somehow returned (possibly through intervention by said old gods) to give us music subtly hinting at his experiences.

this hozier addition is frighteningly detailed and I’m here for it

imagine trying out a super risky outfit ur not sure is gonna land well and on your way to the party you fall into a bog and become a bog body and in like 3,000 years they pull you out in like a pink mesh bathing suit with an applique that says “barbie girl” on the front tucked in as a body suit to a pair of track shorts that say “your card was declined” on the ass and a pair of elevated 90s gel sandals with a hitclips clipped to the strap with one cartridge (60 seconds of an nsync song) and they reconstruct you in a museum and tell the public that’s how people dressed

tevilosocratek asked: What's Soul Eater? (And do you recommend watching it?)

liquidstar:

If you can get passed some fanservice then yes I recommend it, but if it bothers you too much there’s no need to put yourself through it. It’s not as bad as say, bnha, since the “fanservice character” is mostly a background one and an adult, but ofc its still pretty annoying and obviously not ok. But being critical of things is an important part of media consumption that everyone does, so never assume that just because I like a show I also like EVERY aspect about it (Not just in the moral sense but writing and production too). Also when going into it it’s important to note that the fanservice is a lot heavier in the first 3 episodes because they’re all prologues so they’re a bit goofier, since they’re divorced from the main story and only serve as intros.

Anyway, the show itself is about a school called the Death Weapon Meister Academy, a school started by Lord Death (the grim reaper) where kids are trained to fight witches and monsters known as kishin, kishin are created when people consume human souls. The students that fight them are paired, one is a weapon and the other a meister. Weapons are people who literally have the ability to turn themselves into actual weapons, their meister partner is the person who wields them, and their power becomes a lot stronger when they resonate their souls. Weapons eat the souls of kishin and witches to become stronger, if a weapon eats 99 kishin souls and one witch soul (which is VERY hard to get) they can become a death scythe, a weapon Lord Death can use.

I think the best thing about the show is the characters, they’re all really fleshed out and have good arcs but they’re also so goofy and charming and fun, like you really just love their dynamics and personalities so much that you root for them, especially as you learn more about them and their friendships and everything. You feel like you’re having fun with them a lot of the time. Plus, their designs are all really good, I always joke that “none of them look like they’re going to the same place”, but in all honesty it’s just because they’re all so distinct in the way they look and dress, even just the small differences in Liz and Patty’s outfits. Another huge draw for the show is the animation, it’s amazing. The show itself is over 10 years old but the animation is so fucking good to this day, it’s fluid and dynamic, Studio Bones knew what they were doing, and they still do just look at MP100.

Here are some of the main characters

  • Lord Death: The grim reaper, founder of the DWMA, and kind of a huge goofball. But he can also be pretty scary when he damn well wants.
  • Maka Albarn: She’s basically a meister prodigy, she strives to be as good as her mom was. Despite being the honor roll kid, she’s definitely not afraid to break any rules and follows her gut and fists a lot.
  • Soul Evans: Nicknamed Soul Eater, Soul is a scythe and Maka’s weapon partner. He’s a self proclaimed “cool guy” but he really cares about his friends and meister more than anything.
  • Black*Star: Spelled with an actual star, he’s an assassin but he’s not good at it. He’s loud and obnoxious and hyperactive, but he really believes that one day he’s gonna surpass God.
  • Tsubaki Nakatsukasa : Black*Star’s weapon partner, she’s easily the kindest and most rational out of the main group. She’s patient and polite, but also one of the strongest weapons out there because of her ability to be more than one type of weapon.
  • Death The Kid: He’s Lord Death’s son and as a grim reaper he has a huge amount of pressure put on him for what he should live up to, so this manifested into some pretty intense OCD and an obsession with symmetry (Sidenote as someone with OCD I just really like him)
  • Liz and Patty Thomson: Twin pistols and Kid’s partners, they used to be heavily involved in criminal activity and known as the “Devils of Brooklyn”. Now Liz is more of a stereotypical teenage girl, while Patty is a lot more child-like, though their past does sort of show sometimes.
  • Crona: Crona doesn’t join the main group until later in the series, they’re a meister and their weapon partner is… Their own blood. Crona starts off as an antagonist but gets redeemed as we find out that they were pretty much only being forced to do anything bad by their terribly abusive mother. (Sidenote 2 as an nonbinary person I just really like them)

Obviously there are a lot more characters but I think these are the most important to know. But even besides them the entire cast of characters is so much fun, they’re just all so lively and colorful and charming. But on top of that they’re also really well written and I love them all.

havanapitbull

the crew goes out into the forest just to film random b-roll shit and the director accidentally finds the like..rarest worm on earth so they run back to their house like COYOTE LOOK and then there is a very heartfelt and sincere response to weird worm including an entire mounted piece of wall art apparently

I’m real happy that this man is out there living his dream life. All he wants is marvel at nature and writhe in pain for a camera, and he gets to do both as his job.

study less study smart

I decided to share my notes taken from this amazing 1 hour Youtube lecture by Marty Lobdell. i really liked him and his tips, i think they are super effective and cover a lot of situations! i highly recommend it!!!!! wow

but here are the tips and examples Marty mentions, so if you don’t have the time to go through the full hour, you can just scroll down. hope this helps somebody!

  • Break your study time in chunks with breaks
    • most students lose focus at 25 minutes
    • it’s a mistake to keep going once you do, since you won’t actually learn anything and you’ll hate every minute of it
    • so when you start losing focus take a 5 minute break
    • do something nice like talking to someone or listening to music
    • it’s something you practice so with time you’ll be able to work for more time without losing focus
    • in the end of the study session have a big reward you look forward to
  • Create a study area
    • environment highly affects the way you act. Bedrooms are for sleeping, kitchens for eating: you’ll feel sleepy in your bedroom and hungry in the kitchen. So if you have a study area, it’ll be easier to start studying and staying focused.
    • study in a specific room like an office or school library if you can
    • if you have to study in your bedroom use a specific object you only use for studying: a lamp/desk. Make it a no-distraction, away from your bed, blank walls area.
  •  The more active the learning, the better
    • 80% active learning 20% passive
    • ask yourself: is it a concept or a fact?
    • learning a concept: understand/grasp/know it
      • put it into your own words
      • really think about the meaning of it
      • relate it with something you already know
      • teach somebody else. Recapitulate what you’ve learned. Talk out loud even if you don’t have anyone to teach - talk alone. Or at anyone that listens.
    • learning a fact: memorize it
      • use mnemonics
        • Acronyms (e.g. colours of the rainbow RoyGBiv – red orange yellow green blue indigo violet)
        •  Coined sayings - anything popular or sayings you’ve heard since you were a child.
        • Interacting images – work even better if they’re weird. Creative associations make you never forget specific details. (e.g. 1 gram of fat has 9 calories: picture a fat cat – each cat has 9 lives)
      • any time 2 things are highly similar but not the same you will get maximal interference!! USE mnemonics!! (e.g. afferent vs efferent neurons: SAME - Sensory Afferent Motor Efferent)
  • Be a part of  study groups
    • others can help you in ways you never thought before
  • Recognizing VS remembering
    • never confuse the two
    • while reviewing a chapter you may recognize concepts but not actually know them
    • and when you get to the test you won’t be able to remember any of it
    • so quiz yourself without looking at it
    • or stop in a page of your notes/textbook and ask yourself what is the concept immediately after and before it
  • Get your REM Sleep
    • get ~8 hours so you don’t undo your studying
    • this is how your brain stores permanent memories
    • without it you’re ability to remember seriously decreases
    • most people don’t even begin to take the advice but it’s simple: sleep better. Do better.
  • There’s 162 hours in a week. There is time.
    • reflect on what you are doing with your time and what activities you have to prioritize to succed as a student
  • Taking notes is vital.
    • right after the class take 5 minutes to expand everything you’ve jotted down, give it depth.
    • NOT hours later. You won’t remember half the things you wrote down.
  • Ask your questions to class mates and teachers.
    • teachers want you to succeed and it’s more than ok to ask your question in the teacher’s office or in the next class
  • How to use a textbook: SQ3R technique
    • Survey Question Read Recite Review
      • Survey: skim through the entire chapter in a couple of minutes.
      • Raise questions: e.g. what is osmosis? What is this graphic about? What is a prototype?
      • it causes you to look for answers and you’ll find the information better once you actually study it after. If you intend to find something you learn it better.
  • Start studying for tests early.
    • don’t undo yourself. You should only be reviewing the days before the test. don’t leave it till the last minute!

(don’t just scroll through this!!!! really think about these methods and how you can actually implement them so you can benefit from them!!! these actually work but only if you put them into practice boo good luck!)
